Children's Hospital Pittsburgh of UPMC, a hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is the only hospital in Southwestern Pennsylvania dedicated solely to the care of infants, children, and young adults. Children's Hospital Pittsburgh of UPMC was one of only eight pediatric hospitals in the United States to make U.S. News & World Report's 2010-11 Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll. It is also one of only eight children's hospitals in the United States to be named as a Leapfrog Top Hospital and was ranked sixth in the nation by Parents magazine.
Funds raised during the Play It Forward Pittsburgh campaign will support the establishment of the new Starzl Pediatric Transplant Outcomes Network in partnership with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh UPMC. The vision is a network of pediatric transplant institutions committed to continuous improvement until every child can achieve a long and healthy life.
Play it Forward Pittsburgh is a movement of leading community institutions, citizens and professional sports teams who are joining forces to raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation, register donors, fund groundbreaking research projects and save lives.
22 Americans die every day waiting for a life-saving organ. More than 117,000 people are currently on the national organ transplant waitlist, including nearly 8,000 in Pennsylvania. Despite being home to some of the top transplant centers in the world, only about half of eligible Pittsburgh residents are registered organ donors, which contributes to the shortage of organs in the region.
In December 2016, the Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed their participation in a White House initiative to reduce the organ waiting list and help more people access organ transplants. In true team fashion, Pittsburgh's other two major sports franchises - the Pirates and the Penguins - quickly embraced the cause and Play It Forward Pittsburgh was born. Our citywide campaign is bringing together the biggest names in Pittsburgh sports, business, entertainment and medicine to get every eligible resident registered as organ donors, raise funds to support the Starzl Center for Pediatric Transplantation Excellence and educate the whole city over the course of one season.
